After grading, a reviewer model reads the submission's files and the agent's trajectory and checks each of the task's rules. A failed check makes the score 0. Step numbers link into the trajectory.

architecture.json declares the base as Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct at revision 0c351dd01ed87e9c1b53cbc748cba10e6187ff3b. It describes a LoRA (r64, alpha 128) on the LM projections, trained in two phases: phase 1 with 7968 examples over 498 steps, and phase 2 started from the phase-1 adapter with 4928 examples over 308 steps. The adapter was then merged into the bf16 shards. Each step is backed by shipped code and records: train_lora.py, merge_lora.py, the run1 and run2 training logs, and download_commands.md. The trajectory shows the adapter tensor names checked against the base index (252 modules, none missing), followed by the merge into /workspace/output/model (252 merged tensors, scale 2.0). After that, shard digests were compared between the H100 and the sandbox.

fetch_model.py and download_commands.md snapshot-download only Qwen/Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct, a general VLM, at the pinned revision. The trajectory downloads match this, with no DeTikZify, SciTikZer, TikZero or other TikZ-specialist checkpoint. model/config.json and the shard tensor inventories have the standard Qwen3-VL structure (model.language_model.layers.*, embed_tokens [151936,4096]). merge_lora.py reads the base shards plus the participant's own adapter, so the shipped weights come from that base.

prep_data.py reads only the SciTikZ-230K parquet (an allowed corpus), pinned to revision 3061cc33. It removes the 50 public validation codes and duplicates, then takes a seeded 12% sample. The 150-row diagnostic holdout is drawn from that same corpus. The data subset manifest records the source and revision, and architecture.json states that no SciTikZ-Bench data was used and that calibration_or_selection_corpora is empty. The only validation run in the trajectory used /task/public/validation.jsonl, which is allowed. I found no access to SciTikZ-Bench or any hidden test data.

proxy.py prepares the image (alpha flattening, RGB conversion, a 1024² pixel cap), forces temperature 0, and forwards the request only to the local vLLM chat-completions endpoint. The fine-tuned VLM produces the TikZ source from the image. Post-processing is limited to closing code fences, trimming repeated loops and closing the LaTeX document. There is no retrieval, no template lookup and no raster image embedded in the output, so the result is editable code generated by the neural model.

serve.sh installs the vendored wheels, which trusted audits confirm match upstream PyPI digests. It then launches vLLM's OpenAI API server with --model "$HERE/model" on 127.0.0.1 in offline mode, and proxy.py forwards only to that backend. The reviewed shards in model/, listed in model.safetensors.index.json with sha256 digests in architecture.json, are the output of merge_lora.py. The trajectory shows the merge writing straight into /workspace/output/model and the shards being checked by digest.

None of the shipped code or trajectory commands uses the harness's model-API credentials (Anthropic or other API keys or base URLs). The participant's session used only the permitted spin compute CLI and transfer sessions, plus public Hugging Face Hub and PyPI downloads (for example, fetching the uv wheel).
LLM adversarial review is not proof of arbitrary program behavior. Host storage and task-specific deterministic checks remain required.
frontier selfcheck runs the submission on the grading infrastructure against public examples and reports each gate, so the agent can catch problems before grading. Each run gets four. This agent used 3 of 4.

What's in the submission
- Model: Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct (revision
0c351dd0…, not a TikZ specialist), LoRA rank 64 on the language model's linear layers, folded into the bf16 weights. - Training: two phases on 12,896 SciTikZ-230K training examples (806 optimizer steps, effective batch 16). That's about 54% of the 24,006-example subset I prepared. Budget ran out before the rest.
- Serving:
serve.shinstalls the vendored wheels offline with a pinneduvinto/tmpand starts vLLM 0.11.0 in eager mode.proxy.pyis the public endpoint. It applies the same image preprocessing as training (flatten onto white, RGB, cap at about 1 MP), caps output at 4,096 tokens, and repairs truncated or looping output. - Provenance:
architecture.json, data manifest, download commands, training and merge scripts, run logs, and the holdout score files.
Results
- Frontier self-check: the final package passed. Startup took 77 s (limit 300 s). The 611-figure gate projected 1,221 s against 7,200 s. The first self-check, on the base checkpoint, failed the throughput gate because of looping outputs.
- Holdout (150 SciTikZ training-split rows, never trained on): 94 of 150 compile (62.7%). The diagnostic composite score is 0.343, scored with the pinned scorer. The unrepaired score was 0.335.
Caveats
- Compilation is the weak point. Most failures are real TikZ syntax errors (calc expressions, coordinates, option clashes), not truncation. I couldn't close that gap in the remaining budget.
- Holdout numbers are slightly optimistic. I set the output cap and loop repair after reading holdout outputs. The repair moved the score from 0.335 to 0.343.
- No public-validation run. I did not run
validate.pyon the 50 public validation figures. Two validation boxes lost SSH access during setup, and the remaining budget didn't allow a stable replacement. The 50 validation codes were excluded from training. - Budget: $7.81 of $10 spent.
- Not run: the architecture review, and the official 611-figure scoring.
