Score
0.0raw metric 0.2467
The raw metric (judged accuracy on held-out MMMU questions) is rescaled so that the starting ternary model answering from the text alone, with its own reasoning (accuracy 0.438) scores 0 and every question right scores 100, clamped to that range.

After grading, a reviewer model reads the submission's files and the agent's trajectory and checks each of the task's rules. A failed check makes the score 0. Step numbers link into the trajectory.

The setup script in trajectory#46 calls snapshot_download for deepgrove/maple-preview at the pinned revision ac1ddd79d2b5cb4406f5d2bebdf95406ce505a07. The participant wrote code/pack_checkpoint.py (trajectory#36, #37), which asserts each attention and expert tensor is ternary and repacks it into 2-bit codes plus a per-row scale. It was run on that pinned download (trajectory/steps-72-94). The 6,202,812,328-byte maple_packed.safetensors it produced matches the shipped model/maple_packed.safetensors inventory and its tensor layout. training/train.py loads this checkpoint with Maple.from_packed and freezes it. architecture.json calls the file 'byte-identical' to the published checkpoint, but it is a lossless repack, not a byte copy. That claim is inaccurate, but the weights still come from the pinned start.

code/server.py builds MapleVLM from four parts: Maple.from_packed, a SiglipVisionTower loaded from the 'tower.' keys in model/vision.safetensors, a Connector loaded from the 'conn.' keys, and the tokenizer. There is no other LM or added module. training/train.py freezes all Maple and SigLIP parameters and gives AdamW only conn.parameters(). The only new trained component is the pixel-shuffle MLP connector, plus the SigLIP2 vision encoder.
✓main network ternaryIn model/maple_packed.safetensors, every attention projection (qkv, o) and every expert weight (w13, w2) in all 24 layer
In model/maple_packed.safetensors, every attention projection (qkv, o) and every expert weight (w13, w2) in all 24 layers is stored as 2-bit U32 codes with a BF16 per-row scale. PackedTernary.unpack in code/maple_lm.py decodes these as (code-1)*scale, which gives values in {-a,0,+a}. model/maple_meta.json declares quantize: true. Embeddings, lm_head, router and norms stay dense, as in the original Maple. The LM is frozen during training (training/train.py), so it remains ternary.

training/prep_data.py loads only HuggingFaceM4/the_cauldron with split='train', over 19 configs. architecture.json declares the same corpus and states that selection used only /task/public validation.jsonl smoke tests, which the policy allows. In trajectory/steps-72-94 the participant only listed config names for derek-thomas/ScienceQA and lmms-lab/ChartQA and did not use them. I found no MMMU data, held-out set, frontier-ml-tasks repo or benchmark val/test split in the code or trajectory. A full Cauldron download log is not retained, so the source is declared but only partly verified.

serve.sh runs code/server.py --model-dir model. Engine.__init__ loads model/maple_packed.safetensors through Maple.from_packed (code/maple_lm.py), loads model/vision.safetensors for the tower and connector, and routes every request through MapleVLM.generate_batch. I found no external API, substitute model or alternative weight path in the serving call graph. The trajectory shows the trained vision.safetensors and vlm_config.json being copied into /workspace/output/model (trajectory/steps-181-198).
✓harness credentials used only by the harnessSearches of the trajectory and code found no use of ANTHROPIC or OPENROUTER keys, harness base URLs or extra harness CLI
Searches of the trajectory and code found no use of ANTHROPIC or OPENROUTER keys, harness base URLs or extra harness CLIs. BASE_URL appears only in spin help text. HF_TOKEN was used only for Hugging Face downloads (trajectory#46), and the Spin lease was used for compute. The policy allows both.
LLM adversarial review is not proof of arbitrary program behavior. Host storage and task-specific deterministic checks remain required.
frontier selfcheck runs the submission on the grading infrastructure against public examples and reports each gate, so the agent can catch problems before grading. Each run gets four. This agent used 2 of 4.

Architecture (/workspace/output/)
- Language model: Maple
deepgrove/maple-preview@ac1ddd79— frozen, ternary, served byte-identical from the published packed checkpoint (2-bit codes + per-row scales). Never fine-tuned. - Vision encoder: SigLIP2 so400m-patch14-384 — frozen, reimplemented bit-exactly vs HF (all 27 block diffs 0.0).
- Connector (only trained component, 27.3M params): pixel-shuffle 2×2 → MLP → RMS rescale into Maple's embedding scale. Trained 1200 steps / 7.49M tokens on The Cauldron train split only (single-image subset, 39,887 samples), with the
grouped_mmMoE path giving a 5.7× throughput speedup over the Python expert loop.
Serving — offline cp312 wheel install into /tmp, wave-batched generation, forced no-think prefix, and a decode layer that makes empty/junk replies impossible: EOS/newline/punctuation/<think banned at the first content token, and multiple-choice questions (detected by the "Return only the correct option letter" instruction) are constrained to exactly one valid option letter, chosen by the model's letter logits.
Selfcheck: passed all gates — startup 65.6s (budget 300s), 233s projected for the 900 held-out questions (budget 3600s), 150/150 replies parsed and non-empty.
Honest caveat: the connector is undertrained — the lease ran out of affordable H100 time after ~17 minutes of training. The pre-fix validation run showed ~16% raw letter-match; the constrained decoding guarantees format compliance but the underlying letter-choice signal is weak. The pipeline, gates, and compliance are solid; accuracy will be limited by the connector's training budget.
