Score
37.8raw metric 0.3782
The raw metric (bits per byte on held-out text) is rescaled so that 1.461 bits per byte, the organizers' 7-minute GPT-2 baseline scores 0 and 1.25 bits per byte, a target set by the task author scores 100, clamped to that range.

After grading, a reviewer model reads the submission's files and the agent's trajectory and checks each of the task's rules. A failed check makes the score 0. Step numbers link into the trajectory.

The architecture review was skipped by the operator; this receipt proves nothing.
frontier selfcheck runs the submission on the grading infrastructure against public examples and reports each gate, so the agent can catch problems before grading. Each run gets four. This agent used 2 of 4.

What's in /workspace/output:
train.sh→src/train.py: trains everything from scratch in the wall-clock budget — byte-level BPE tokenizer (16384 merges + BOS), then 3 × 97M-param GPT-style transformers (RoPE, RMSNorm, tied embeddings, GELU 4×, dropout 0.1), each on an equal time slice with a cosine-to-zero schedule, EMA weights, bf16 +torch.compileat ~340k tok/s; best-EMA checkpoint per member selected on a 1.5% held-out corpus split; temperature (T=1.05) fit on the same split. Verified end-to-end at full budget: 3386s of 3600.serve.sh→src/server.py+src/scoring.py: ensemble served as an exact uniform probability mixture; windowed scoring (W=2048, chunk 512) shared by/scoreand/distso they agree by construction (measured ≤0.0003 nats).architecture.json,data_manifest.json,README.md,logs/(training evidence from the reference run).
The two decisive findings this session:
- Compliance fix: my earlier trailing-space augmentation used per-genre rates copied from validation statistics — exactly the "select on the validation split" gray zone. I replaced it with a rate-agnostic design: every ~16KB stretch of training text draws its own trailing-space rate ~U(0, 0.5) and blank-line rate ~U(0, 0.35), so the model must infer each document's ratio from context.
- New gap found: validation's simple_wiki has 19% blank lines; the corpus has zero (all blank lines were stripped alongside trailing spaces). The same augmentation covers this.
The principled version beat the copied-statistics version on public bpb (1.3018 vs 1.3089): simple_wiki −0.024 (blank-line coverage), childes −0.017 (in-context rate adaptation), tiny losses on the near-zero-rate genres — while removing the only rule-compliance risk. Final frontier selfcheck: all 15 gates pass with ≥95% margins.
