The raw metric (bits per byte on held-out text) is rescaled so that 1.461 bits per byte, the organizers' 7-minute GPT-2 baseline scores 0 and 1.25 bits per byte, a target set by the task author scores 100, clamped to that range.

After grading, a reviewer model reads the submission's files and the agent's trajectory and checks each of the task's rules. A failed check makes the score 0. Step numbers link into the trajectory.

architecture.json declares base_model "none" and base_revision "from-scratch", and the code matches. train.py trains a fresh byte-level BPE tokenizer with tokenizers.Tokenizer(models.BPE()) and BpeTrainer on the corpus training split. lmcore.LM builds the model and _init_weights fills it with random normal values. Nothing calls from_pretrained and no external checkpoint is loaded. The only load_state_dict calls read the run's own saved best checkpoint (train.py) or member weights in OUTPUT_DIR (combine.py and serve.py).

The shipped files are code, configs and logs. No vocabularies, weights or tables are embedded. lmcore.byte_decoder rebuilds the standard GPT-2 byte-to-unicode mapping with a short algorithm; that is an algorithmic constant, not learned data. The RoPE tables are computed from theta. The vocabulary and the weights are learned from the corpus at replay time.

train.sh runs train.py and combine.py with --corpus $CORPUS_DIR and --out $OUTPUT_DIR. train.py reads only $CORPUS_DIR/*.txt and, for the members, the tokenizer.json it wrote itself to OUTPUT_DIR. It writes only under OUTPUT_DIR (member dirs, logs, safetensors). combine.py reads the corpus and OUTPUT_DIR and writes ensemble.json and combine_log.txt there. There is no network use and no pretrained loading. The corpus source is declared in data_manifest.json as the task-supplied local corpus, with checksums.

serve.sh execs serve.py with WEIGHTS_DIR. Engine loads tokenizer.json, ensemble.json, and each member's config.json and model.safetensors, all from WEIGHTS_DIR, and builds the model from the submitted lmcore.py. It reads no corpus, cache or other model, and makes no network calls.
✓causal normalized scoring/score (lmcore.score_ids) and /dist (lmcore.next_logprobs) run the same LM ensemble with the same window rule a(p) = max
/score (lmcore.score_ids) and /dist (lmcore.next_logprobs) run the same LM ensemble with the same window rule a(p) = max(0, (p//S+1)*S - W). Attention is causal (is_causal=True) and zero padding is only placed after the real tokens, so each log-prob depends only on the prefix. /dist returns log_softmax over all V output tokens, and ensemble mixing is logsumexp minus log K, which stays normalized. Requests are independent: there is no request-history cache, no lookup and no special-casing of the audit endpoints.

The trajectory shows no WebSearch or WebFetch calls; the tool calls are only Bash, Write, Edit and Read. The only Slowrun mentions are the task prompt and contract text (step 1/2) and a memory note restating the rule (steps 83-100). No git clone, wget or fetch of Slowrun-related resources appears.

Searches of the trajectory found no use of ANTHROPIC/OPENAI-style keys or a harness base URL, and no claude/codex sub-sessions. The curl calls only hit the participant's local server (127.0.0.1) for health checks. Remote compute went through the spin CLI, which is allowed.
LLM adversarial review is not proof of arbitrary program behavior. Host storage and task-specific deterministic checks remain required.
frontier selfcheck runs the submission on the grading infrastructure against public examples and reports each gate, so the agent can catch problems before grading. Each run gets four. This agent used 2 of 4.

The submission is in: /workspace/output (29 files, no weights) was graded as it stands at 07:56 UTC.
Result: on the public validation set, the official validate.py reports 1.356 bits per byte (reward 0.498), with 0 failed requests. The reward is clamped at 1.25 bpb, so this is above the ceiling. I did not reach the 1.25 target.
What's submitted
train.shtrains an 8192-token byte-level BPE tokenizer on the training split, then trains five 30M-parameter causal transformers (8 layers, d_model 512, RoPE, SwiGLU, tied embeddings) concurrently on the GPU. Each member runs on a wall-clock schedule ending atREPLAY_START + 3300 s.combine.pykeeps the best-k members by dev bpb and writesensemble.json.serve.sh/serve.pyserve/health,/vocab,/scoreand/dist. The ensemble averages probabilities. Scoring uses one sliding-window rule, so/score,/distand truncation agree to about 2e-6 nats.architecture.json,data_manifest.jsonandevidence/cover provenance, the corpus checksums, and the logs and reports from the full v1 run.
Verification
- A full 3600-second-budget run of v1 on an H100 finished in about 3,330 seconds.
- The two
frontier selfcheckruns both passed every gate, with a 3.7–4.1 s startup. The digest matched on the second run.
Caveats you should weigh
- Dev overstated generalization. My dev split (random chunks from the training files) gave 1.128 bpb for the ensemble. Validation gave 1.356. Those chunks share source texts with training, so the split is optimistic.
- I looked at validation while choosing. After seeing the gap, I tried a tail-of-file holdout, which is a training-only proxy. I trained two-member proxy ensembles on 95% of the data: 12 and 20 epochs, dropout 0.2. Their public validation score was 1.420, worse than v1's 1.356. So I kept v1 as submitted, which was fixed before any validation feedback. Those proxy logs are in
/workspace/dev/post_hoc/, not in the submission. - The architecture review did not run, so the submission could still be scored zero there.
Budget and next steps: $8.73 of $10 went to GPU leases, and the lease is released. A better held-out-source proxy would be needed to tune epochs and regularization without touching validation. That needs a larger experiment budget than I had left.
